Andreas Schlaegel (born 1966 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo) is an artist, author and educator living in Berlin. His art criticism is published by magazines, such as Flash Art (Milan), Kunstkritikk.com (Copenhagen), taz (Berlin), and others. His essays on contemporary artists were included in publications by major institutions of contemporary art, such as Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, UCLA Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), MUSAC (Leon), Aspen Museum, Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt/Main), Thyssen Bornemisza Contemporary (Vienna), Julia Stoschek Collection (Düsseldorf/Berlin) and many others.
Educated as a painter and sculptor, Andreas Schlaegel has since expanded his practice to include performance, music and curating, with an ongoing focus on collaborative practices. His art projects and exhibitions were on show at various institutions, from artist run spaces, such as D7 (Copenhagen), oqbo (Berlin), Blank Projects (Cape Town) to Kunsthalle Ravensburg, TBA21(Vienna) or at the Venice Biennale.
Currently Andreas Schlaegel is the lecturer of theory of photography at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach, and will be teaching a course on the value of art in real life and literature at Novia University (Jakobstad, Fi)in 2020. Previous regular teaching includes Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee, Khio Oslo and HdK Hamburg, he also lectured or held workshops at art academies or museums in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Bergen (Norway), Cape Town (South Africa), Dhakka (Bangladesh), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and many others.
